The April 2018 edition of Essence Magazine featured 100+ women of color who are known as the women who turned the tide.
“In 2018, women of color continue to wield their power for the greater good of our community and beyond. Thanks to the black women voters and organizers in Alabama, a controversial senate election forged a historic outcome.”
Being woke is more than a hashtag, it’s a lifestyle..
A little backstory..I was on my way home one Thursday evening and I received a call from Jazlyn, someone I met during my days Tuskegee University. I remember her saying “I know this is super last minute, but I need a photoshoot done this week for a feature in Essence Magazine.” I had to pull over to make sure I heard her correctly lol. I was in awe, like me? You want me to take your photos for Essence Magazine? *jaw drops* She stated the reason she reached out to me was because I was one of the few who purchased her t-shirts when we were in college (Support your friends, it always come back to you!) and of course, my brand’s name (KZW Capturing Essence). I literally dropped EVERYTHING and made an impromptu trip from Charlotte, NC to Tuskegee, AL overnight.
It’s amazing that KZW Capturing Essence’s first magazine publication landed in Essence Magazine. If you’ve read my bio, you know that I grew up attending the festivals in New Orleans. I went to Essence Festival nearly every year. I could not have forseen this in a million years which tells me this was God’s plan from the start. My takeaway from this: Identify and pursue your purpose/passion and he’ll shed some light on things bigger than you can ever imagine.
Thank you Jazlyn for allowing me to capture your essence for this feature! Check out some images from the session below.
